title: Dracula: Dead and Loving It (1995) up

rating:

pretty funny!! had a lot of great jokes and gags.

screenshots:

title: How To With John Wilson (2023) up

rating:

had some good bits, but an HBO budget isn't really making it any better. he should either continue but chill already or quit while he's ahead.

title: Inherent Vice (2014) up

rating:

rewatched just because i LOVE joanna newsom in this, but there are so many other fun people (Hong Chau, Martin Short). and johnny greenwood's soundtrack is great. the meandering plot is relaxing, the bits narrated so smoothly by joanna newsom are presciently post-facto.

screenshots:

title: Fionna and Cake, Season 1, Episodes 1-4 (2023) up

rating:

just... ok?

screenshots:

title: Southland Tales (2006) up

rating:

🤯. stupendous. mind amazing. i could not have asked for something more astoundingly good. truly understands the meaning of apocalypse. justin timberlake looks like an off-brand justin timberlake. (i don't know if i could watch again—a little too much suicide for me)

screenshots:

title: Knock at the Cabin (2023) up

rating:

worst movie of the year. i hated it. deeply and utterly. cruel with no discernible redeeming qualities. utterly misunderstands the meaning of the apocalypse.

title: Peripheral - Season 1 (2022) up

rating:

Surpassed my expectations. Very glad there won't be a season 2 so it won't end up disappointing me later. Almost makes me want to read cyberpunk novels again.

title: Nimona (2023) up

rating:

Super cute!!

title: They Cloned Tyrone (2023) up

rating:

good writing.

title: What We Do in the Shadows - Season 5 (2023) up

rating:

NOT bad.

title: The Eric Andre Show - Season 6 (2023) up

rating:

yep good

screenshots:

title: Terry Pratchett's The Colour of Magic (2008) up

rating:

review: ....meh?

screenshots:

title: Asteroid City (2023) up

rating:

review: i was prepared to dislike this movie given its "star-studded cast" but it surprised me. the line "you can't wake up if you don't fall asleep" speaks to american apathy so deeply.

title: Hogfather (2006) up

rating:

review: tedious, boring, slow, heavy handed - "not the best Discworld movie"

screenshots:

title: Going Postal (2010) up

rating:

review: moderately entertaining. the actor who places Adora (Claire Foy, screenshot 1) has that Katy Perry Yennefer-from-The-Witcher face.

screenshots:

title: Gormenghast (2000) up

rating:

review: mr. flay and the feral girl are my favorite. christopher lee does a great job. i also like lady fuchsia, even though she is pretty terrible. thanks for reading my review.

screenshots:

title: Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984) up

rating:

review: fills me with such joy - it is ecological and heartfelt, deeply idealistic. i love Teto, the ohms, the tapestry illustration at the beginning, all the little plants... gosh!

screenshots:

title: Howl's Moving Castle (2004) up

rating:

review: a gorgeous movie. i love the anti-war theme and that Howl is a twink. Heen is my favorite.

screenshots:

title: Spirited Away (2001) up

rating:

review: absolutely loved it. it fills my mind with dragons and magic.

screenshots:

title: The Sword in the Stone (1963) up

rating:

review: very cute - the pacing was interesting. it reminds me that narratives and stories don't have to follow a set structure.

screenshots:

title: Kiki's Delivery Service (1989) up

rating:

review: SOOOO GOOD. so gentle. so low stakes. it made me feel safe.

screenshots:

title: The Ice Pirates (1984) up

rating:

review: lol. a bad but funny space comedy action movie. it doesn't do anything well, but there were a few moments or twists that made me giggle. better than "Star Wars" for sure.
âšž anjelica huston wears amazing outfits
âšž the spaceship gets herpe (singular?)
âšž very weird jarring and good time skip thing at end
âšž space eunuchs
âšž amazons

⚟ the worst part was the over-the-top, prolonged hetersexual sex scene

screenshots:

title: The Princess Bride (1987) up

rating:

review: much wittier than i remembered! the jokes and faces people make go by quickly and the action keeps it going.

title: Ponyo (2008) up

rating:

review: SOOOOOOOOOOOOO good. we watched it while we were at the beach :) ponyo's dad was right, though. ponyo's mom is like a Great Fairy.

screenshots:

title: Matango (1963) up

rating:

review: i had disregarded this movie many years ago as a middling monster movie, but it's so much more than that. it is about class, addiction, post-war japan, sex appeal! the set and character design are over the top and really make an impact at the climax.

screenshots:

title: The Brave Little Toaster (1987) up

rating:

review: this had too many songs. it was as cute as i remembered! i liked the "message" about keeping old appliances.

screenshots:

title: The Day of the Triffids (1981) up

rating:

review: A reaaaally good BBC mini-series (which is practically a movie). The texture of the film made me relax (nostalgia). For me it brought up thoughts about anthropogenic climate change and fossil fuels, distrust of nature and science, the self-destructive nature of nature, the way able people think disability is a death sentence. Watching it motivated me to finally try and read Wyndham's book.

screenshots:

title: Hellzapoppin (1941) up

rating:

review: funny. zany. wacky. a lot of good gags. Whitey's Lindy Hoppers bring it to an amazing level of energy. some of it's certainly dated (robert e lee sketch) but overall i liked it.

screenshots:

title: Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016) up

rating:

review: good! cute! beautiful... poignant. what i expect from Waititi... (both + and -). was nice to hear "Leonard Cohen - The Partisan"

screenshot:

title: Fumer Fait Tousser (2022) up

rating:

review: a funny French movie with cancerous sentai folks. a kind of Decameron

screenshot:

title: Filibus (1915) up

rating:

review: amazing. a pure triumph of gender-bending lesbianism

screenshots:

title: Skidoo (1968) up

rating:

review: not great. Carol Channing did a pretty good job. i felt bad for Groucho Marx, though.
